How to behave after the operation

How to behave until up to 3 days after the operation

  1. Take the medication following our instructions – if complications or intolerances occur, please contact us!
  2. Avoid exertion. The circulatory system should be treated with care (no sports or sauna).
  3. Please eat soft food (bananas, mashed potatoes, baby food etc. – please avoid dairy food) and if possible, chew on the side which was not operated. Please do not eat before the anaesthetization wears off.
  4. Please move your lower jaw as little as possible, i. e. talk little and quietly. Please do not play with the wound with the tongue, and please do not suck on it.
  5. Avoid drinks that dissolve the clotted blood, such as fruit juices, carbonated drinks and hot drinks.
  6. Use interval cooling on the first day: Cool for 10 minutes, then take a 10 minute break from cooling – please avoid undercooling when the anaesthetization is still in effect!
  7. Oral hygiene should be kept up in order to avoid an infection. On the first three days, please rinse with chlorhexidine only (without building up major pressure in the mouth; keep the liquid in the mouth for at least one minute). From day three on, you can clean those regions of the mouth with a toothbrush that are sufficiently far away from the operated area.

How to behave from day 3 onwards

  1. You can use enzymes or homoeopathic remedies in addition to the medication prescribed by us.
  2. Infections of the wound usually come up on day 4 after the operation. The already decreasing pain caused by the wound is replaced with strong, pulsative pains. From time to time the patient tastes a foetid, smelling ichor. This requires prompt action. Such troubles will not reduce without treatment (do not take painkillers again, but turn to a doctor). Now, the wound has to be rinsed and a wound drainage has to be applied.
  3. The wound drainage has to be exchanged after 4 days at the latest.
  4. The stitches are normally taken out after 8-10 days.
  5. Swellings and restrictions of the stoma are normal attendant circumstances of surgical interventions on the jaw. They depend on various factors.
